  3.                OzGIS PC Mapping System          
  4.                =======================
  5.  
  6. OzGIS is an extensive system for the analysis and display of geographically
  7. referenced data. About 150 menus provide an enormous range of options for:
  8.  
  9. . importing data from databases, spreadsheets and Geographic Information
  10.   Systems (GISs) or purchased from Census Bureaux or mapping agencies.
  11. . processing data in preparation for display and analysis
  12. . display of data as several different types of maps and diagrams.
  13. . facilities to analyse displayed data and to manipulate the maps.
  14. . Output to printers, plotters and files.
  15. . Special support for site catchment analysis and territory assignment.
  16.  
  17. The system can be used to analyze socio-economic and demographic data produced
  18. by censuses and surveys and to support management decisions associated with for
  19. example marketing, sales, site and personnel location, and advertising. Other
  20. spatial data such as environmental data can be displayed.

  23.                   OzGIS Installation for WINDOWS

  28. The software is supplied on floppy disks with most files compressed by
  29. the ZIP program.
  30.  
  31. The files must all be first copied to the hard disk drive that you are going to
  32. use.
  33.  
  34. Two directories are used:
  35.  
  36. \OZGIS holds all the system files
  37. \OZDEMO contains example mapping files.
  38.  
  39. You must use the same disk drive as that holding \OZGIS for your own mapping
  40. directories.
  41.  
  42. The installation procedure is as follows:
  43.  
  44. 1. set up the \OZGIS directory
  45.  
  46. CD \
  47. MKDIR OZGIS
  48.  
  49. 2. copy all files from floppy disk to the \OZGIS directory
  50.  
  51. CD \OZGIS
  52. COPY a:*.* (for each disk)
  53.  
  54. (You can run the demonstration program OZDEMO.EXE by typing OZDEMO if you like)
  55.  
  56. 3. Run the installation procedure MAKE SURE YOU DONT RUN OUT OF DISK SPACE!!

  58. INSTALL

  60. 4. Print the manual (220 pages).

  64. The WOTSNEW.DOC file contains details of changes to the system.

  66. 5. Follow the procedure in the manual to install the programs into WINDOWS
  67. and to configure OzGIS.

  71. 6. Work through the manual following the examples to see how to use OzGIS.

  73. You should at least read the two early chapters:

  75. DATA ENTRY and
  76. BASIC CHOROPLETH MAPPING EXAMPLE

  78. These chapters tell how to bring data into the system and display it, and may
  79. be all you need to know to start displaying maps.
  80.  
  81. OzGIS should run on any WINDOWS3.1 system with at least 4Meg of RAM and a
  82. mouse. A 386 or 486 processor is required.
  83.  
  84. It is recommended that you use the highest resolution and largest number
  85. of colours available to you. A 1Mbyte super VGA video card with matching
  86. monitor and WINDOWS screen driver will give 1024X768 resolution and 256
  87. colours.

  94. The OzGIS demo disk is supplied with the system. It contains a set of example
  95. maps, and you should look at it first to see some of the OzGIS system
  96. capablilities. You can run the demonstration program \ozgis\ozdemo.exe via
  97. the file manager or from the OzGIS group.

  99. Basic configuration ......................
  100.  
  101. The manual will lead you through the configuration of your system and simple
  102. examples. You can try the following, but if there are any problems GO TO THE
  103. MANUAL.

  105. You will have to define the programs to WINDOWS:
  106.

  108. The installation process will copy a program group file for OzGIS for the C:
  109. drive, and will also attemp to copy to the D: drive. You will have to modify the
  110. group for other drives, or if your \WINDOWS directory is not on C: or D:
  111.  
  112. To set up a program group, select "New" from the "Files" menu in the Program
  113. Manager and give the program group file as "OZGIS.GRP"
  114.  
  115. This will pick up the files from \WINDOWS where it was placed by the
  116. installation procedure. You may find that the icons are not enabled.

  121. Suppose the directories are on disk drive D: as D:\OZGIS, D:\OZDEMO and
  122. D:\MAPPING
  123.

  147. If your version of WINDOWS does not allow you to specify a working directory
  148. you should move all the files from \OZDEMO to \OZGIS as that will be the
  149. working directory.

  151. IMPORTANT ........... most problems with installing OzGIS are caused by either
  152. not enough RAM (4Mbytes) or not setting up the groups properly. If you have 
  153. other software loaded (e.g. network) you may not have enough RAM. Try a swap
  154. file.

  156. Now you can display maps using files supplied with the system:

  160. Within WINDOWS run the "Demonstration" program item that you just set up.
  161.  
  162. This will display a series of saved screens and associated text, and will give
  163. an overview of the OzGIS system.

  166. Next ...................
  167.  
  168. Within WINDOWS run the "Simple Mapping" program item that you just set up.
  169.  
  170. This is a subset of the main OzGIS program that is useful for learning the
  171. fundamentals of the mapping system. It is suitable for mapping of attribute
  172. data such as Census data.
  173.  
  174. You select OzGIS options from pulldown menus at the top level and then from
  175. other menus that pop up in the window. The menu changes according to what you
  176. are doing. A new menu appears whenever you can make a selection. If you click
  177. above the menu it will disappear, and clicking within the window will display it
  178. again.
  179.  
  180. Select the DISPLAY A NEW MAP option from the MAPPING pulldown menu and then
  181. give the file names for the Far East Asia map as attribute file FEA and 
  182. geographic file FEA.
  183.  
  184. A map will be displayed.
  185.  
  186. You can try other options such as displaying the next attribute off the FEA
  187. file.
  188.  
  189. Each time you select an option a new map will be displayed.

  191. Finally choose QUIT from the Files Menu.

  194. Now try the full OzGIS system ......................

  196. Within WINDOWS run the "Demo OzGIS" program item that you just set up.

  199. The first example..............
  200.  
  201. First display a map of Australia where the polygons are coloured according to
  202. the attribute data. This is a very common type of map for displaying Census
  203. data, sales, government statistics etc
  204.  
  205. Choose DISPLAY ZONES FOR AN ATTRIBUTE FILE from the Map pulldown menu.

  207. give the attribute file name as OZ
  208.  
  209. give the geographic file name as OZ
  210.  
  211. You will have a default map with legend and distribution diagram. The legend
  212. has the numbers of zones in each class on the left and the class value ranges
  213. to the right of the coloured boxes.
  214.  
  215. Select "Display map" from the Files menu, which regenerates the display, and
  216. usually happens automatically.
  217.  
  218. Now a second example............
  219.  
  220. Now display some geographics data - the islands of Hawaii and rivers.
  221.  
  222. Select "Top menu" from the Files menu.

  225. Choose DISPLAY GEOGRAPHIC FILES from the Map pulldown menu.

  227. Choose the menu option DISPLAY POLYGONS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE

  229. Give the file name as "HAWDLGWB".

  231. Accept the default polygon number and give the legend text as "Hawaii".
  232.  
  233. Accept the default (No) for drawing polygon boundaries.

  235. The islands of Hawaii will be drawn.

  237. Choose the option OVERLAY LINE SEGMENTS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE

  239. Give the file name "HAWDLGST"
  240.  
  241. Accept the default line number and give the legend text as "Rivers".
  242.  
  243. This example uses two files originally in DLG-3 optional format, off the USGS
  244. CD-ROM.  This is a simplified example; usually feature codes in these files are
  245. used to subset the data e.g. to draw rivers and streams in different colours.
